New Work: Dog Day Afternoon

“You don’t understand the things I did and said, but I’m me, and I’m different.”
I was recently invited to take part in an art exhibition in honour of the late American film maker Sidney Lumet. Curated by Jay Shaw & John Vogl, 17 artists have produced screen printed posters based on the director’s filmography, which will be exhibited in Denver, CO on Friday September 9th.
Mine is based on the 70’s classic Dog Day Afternoon, in which Al Pacino & John Cazale star as unsuccessful bank robbers in New York. I remember first seeing this film back in school a number of years ago, so it was very cool to be able to revisit it and produce some art. The poster focuses on Pacino’s character Sonny, starring out of the bank’s front doors, weighing up his options. This film has a very limited setting, with a small number of characters, so I wanted to keep the poster relatively simple & character based, but with a strong mood. I tried out a lot of new techniques with this one, some worked well & some didn’t, but I learned a whole lot regardless. Thoroughly enjoyed doing it, hopefully there’ll be more opportunities like this one in the future.
The print is a 4 colour screen print, numbered in a small edition of 35 and will cost $30. All artists posters will be available to buy first at the show, with anything left over available online in the Kingdom of Nonsense store on September 10th.
